Following his false arrest during the 1965 Watts riots, Richard Kelly (Cedric Sanders) must serve a probated sentence at an all-white seminary. The school’s progressive president, Alan Beckett (William Devane) welcomes the first black student of the seminary, but Richard later learns that Beckett wants black followers, not leaders. Richard finds a potential ally in former missionary, professor Kate Allison (Lauren Holly), as she seeks to heal her own inner wounds. The janitor, Samuel Benton (Lou Gossett, Jr.) becomes Richard’s guiding light. As Samuel guides Richard through the trials of racism and his personal demons, Richard must choose between his dreams and his destiny.
